Having worked at liquor stores, checking ID does help to prevent underage drinking. Underage drinking will not be stopped.
I am not demeaning the work of people handing out books in any way; however the affects of consuming alcohol and the affects of reading a book are very different.
Its been said before, but its not koolaid that is being sold at the liquor stores.
And stats and data show that drinking alcohol, period, is becoming more and more of a social problem. A shame, when its so socially acceptable to drink.
I have an idea. If we valued the work of all employees in our province - whether they are sweeping floors and cleaning toilets, working with the poor/addicted/mentally ill, handing out books, caring for the sick, organizing unions, driving semis, selling liquor, etc. as we ALL contribute to our economy, then we wouldn't be having this discussion about pay equity. This issue isn't about pay equity. It is about public safety. And instead of always trying to say that out SLGA employees are overpaid why don't we try and bring other people's wages up????? Now THERE'S an idea!!
Tommie raises a great point. We don't need to pull down the wages and benefits of average working class union members in certain occupations, we need to raise the levels for those who are struggling to make ends meet at the bottom end. (Unionized or not).
It never ceases to amaze me that those who are most critical of union members earning a decent living so they can raise a family, buy a house and a car, and give a little bit to various causes --- sit silent about the obscene earnings of the corporate elite and CEO's in this country and elsewhere.
Why is a CEO making $15 million a year acceptable, but an average working stiff (who just happens to be a union member) making 40 or 50 thousand a year is such a big problem?

Amen.

Because the working stiff (unionized or not) doesn't own most of the media and can't effectively shape public opinion.
Hi Mike 30 I didn't see anywhere even iterated in this ad that SGEU wants to see the closure of any offsale businesses. I would have more concerns over something like say the home delivery of alcohol on a vast scale, considering the message is about social responsibility. Whoever is in charge of the sale.
Checking ID does not prevent underage drinking.
ReplyDeleteI know it's not SGEU's fault, but it bugs me that people handing out liquor make more money than people handing out books in our city.

So what’s the point here? Are you calling for the closer of all off sale and privet sale of liquor?
