Certain elements of the business crowd resorting to Blackmail

In today's (May 15, 2007) editorial the Saskatoon StarPhoenix attempts to argue that those opposed to the B.C./Alberta Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) are using "Scare Tactics".

Oh there are "scare tactics" being employed alright. But they are not being employed by people who oppose TILMA.

These "scare tactics" are being used by the pro-multi-national corporation types who are attempting to blackmail Saskatchewan into signing this anti-democratic so-called trade agreement by threatening that if we don't sacrifice democracy and sign on - the world will pass us by.

It's just so much more of the constant barrage of negativity coming from certain elements of the business crowd. They oppose community, they oppose public interest, they oppose democracy, they oppose unions, they oppose medicare, they oppose crown corporations, they oppose anyone making a decent living, they oppose any increase to the minimum wage, they oppose improving the lot of those most vulnerable in our society.

And they support secrecy, backroom deals, war and George W. Bush.

I am a Saskatchewan small business person whose annual income is a lot more modest than the average civil servant. I depend upon my US customers for a very large percentage of my sales. They have quite literally, prevented me from moving to Alberta in search of a larger customer base.

People like you hurt me. Not in an esoteric sense, but in a very real, economic one. My customers hear or read the nonsense that out of the mouths of foolish Canadians like yourself, and take their business elsewhere.

Can you explain to me why I should take seriously _any_ person who so casually trots out the name of a foreign leader as a whipping boy?

This is cheap shot politics, intellectual laziness and American bashing as a default setting. It is unworthy commentary for anyone in a position of public importance.

Anonymous,

Thank-you for your comments.

I take it you consider yourself in the category of "certain elements of the business crowd" who are engaged in the constant barrage of negativity I referred to. Otherwise you wouldn't be so outraged.

As for your suggestion that mentioning George Bush is a political cheap shot, tell that to the American people.

According to MSNBC and Newsweek Politics Bush's presidential approval rating is in the tank (at 28%).
